Applications of Electromagnetic Brakes

Updated: Feb 27, 2023

Electromagnetic waves, also called EM waves or EM Radiations, are the changes in space owing to the vibrations that get generated due to the electric and magnetic fields. When an electric field in the circuit gets in contact with the magnetic field, electromagnetic waves induce in space. The fundamental concept is that both these fields are perpendicular to each other while being perpendicular to the traveling path at the same time. These waves travel with the speed of light in a vacuum and cannot be deflected with either field mentioned. The EM waves do not require any medium to travel, and these can pass through the solid, liquid, or even vacuum. Besides, these waves are capable of showing the particle-nature phenomena called diffraction and interference.

Applications of Electromagnetic Brakes

Electromagnetic Brakes work on the fundamental principle of electromagnetic waves. It alludes to the combined concept of both electricity and magnetism, applying simultaneously to the system.

Here is a brief introduction to Electromagnetic (EM) waves.

Coming to the braking system that is based on the principle of EM waves. The whole application aspect of the electromagnetic brakes is being widely implemented owing to their frictionless brakes. It enhances the life of this system together with reliability as wearing out is minimized.

Applications Of Electromagnetic Braking System

Here is the list of all prevalent applications of EM or Electromagnetic Brakes.

  • Locomotives

The trains and trams are seeing the new technological advancement. The old traditional braking systems are being replaced with these better electromagnetic ones. Here the magnetic force is exerted on the braking element of a train to stop it. There is a physical link that transmits the torque to electromagnetic braking systems. Many newly developed cars and buses are also implementing this outstanding braking technology.

  • Mammoth machines in various factories also incorporate the EM braking system for their efficiency. Their excellent technique, eliminating the damaging friction, increases the cost-effectiveness too. It requires great strength and accuracy to stop the large machines, and this braking system works aptly in this regard.

  • Coil Winding Machines is another domain where there is a need to wind the coils for transformers, inductors, chokes, etc. It also uses the electromagnetic braking machine for itself.

  • The implementation of this braking system is prevalent in textile Machinery. The machinery incorporates it for better working and functioning while enjoying their longer lifespan.

  • Besides, the robotic industry also includes the electromagnetic breaks in the robots and their manufacturing machines. There are electric motors that have a high demand for this braking system as well.

  • As per the recent developments in the aircraft industry, the electromagnetic braking system has found its application in this domain.

  • Other applications include tower & portal cranes, vehicle lifting tools, wire drawing machines, wheelchairs. Its application further expands to large machinery like elevators, windmills, printing, and the construction industry.

Conclusion

Electromagnetism is a revolutionary concept that has improved our daily lives, and the EM braking system is another addition. The EM brakes have a considerably longer lifespan, low maintenance, and similar or sometimes better working strength. Hence, their inclusion is another step for the overall betterment of our lifestyle.
